The new Physician Hospitalist Program at St. Francis Hospital & Health Services means the hospital is joining over 3,000 hospitals in adopting a progressive patient care program, according to Dr. Scott Holman, St. Francis VP of Medical Affairs. This also means that more doctors are working on behalf of Northwest Missouri and Southwest Iowa residents than before.
"We have strengthened the physician presence in our area significantly by adding physician hospitalists at St. Francis," said Dr. Holman. "This is a tremendous boost to our community's ability to have its healthcare needs met here at home, without having to leave town."
Whether a physician admits to St. Francis or not, their patient's hospital stay will be enhanced by physician hospitalists who are up-to-date on the latest information about inpatient care, according to Holman.
"St. Francis physician hospitalists are internal medicine specialists whose only focus is the patient in the hospital," said Holman. "They are skilled in the latest diagnostics and treatments. And because they are at the hospital at all times, they can respond immediately should a patient's condition change."
Dr. Holman said that St. Francis physician hospitalists are always on hand to answer questions of patients and their families. "A complete hospitalization summary is sent to each patient's primary care provider upon discharge," said Holman. "And because physician hospitalists are here at St. Francis, patients receive hospital care close to home and experience a much smoother transition to outpatient care."
"Each physician hospitalist will be familiar with a patient's chart and history because they are working closely with the patient's personal physician," added Dr. Holman. "It's really a team of physicians who care for you, not just one. It also means your personal physician has more time to see you at his or her office. So it's a win-win for the patient and the physician."
"There are over 30,000 physician hospitalists administering care to patients throughout the country," said Ty Griffith, VP of Operations and Planning at St. Francis. "These specialists are completely familiar with the inner workings of our hospital. Because they are here to monitor patient conditions throughout the day, the patient recovery process is smoother and quicker."
"We're delighted to be part of this forward-thinking, patient-centered approach to hospital care," concluded Griffith. "And you don't have to experience the inconvenience of going out of town to receive this additional level of personalized care. It's right here in your hometown."
